Audio Metric Testing

Under Factories and Machinery (Noise Exposure) Regulations 1989, stipulates that valid baseline for audio metric testing shall be established to every employee by their employer within twelve months from the date of the regulations takes effect or within six months from the day employee commences work.

Excessive noise can also cause physiological problems other than hearing. It can have an effect on emotions, produce irritability, increase blood pressure and heart rate, and produce nausea. These effects on the employee in a noisy environment are not well defined as an occupational illness, but may have an effect on the quality and efficiency of the work performed.

Noise Exposure Monitoring

Under Factories and Machinery (Noise Exposure) Regulations, 1989 that complying with The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), requires employers to determine if employees are exposed to excessive noise in the workplace.

Exposure to intense noise for an extended period of time may causes hearing loss which is either temporary, permanent, or a combination. Disability from hearing may cause the decrease in ability to identify spoken words or sentences, interfere to communicate and causes work-related disorders.

Through noise exposure monitoring, employers are acknowledged to set maximum permissible noise limits and provides hearing protection devices to employees.

Local Exhaust Ventilation - LEV

Under Occupational Safety and Health 1994, Use and Standard exposure of Chemical Hazardous to Health Regulation 2000 (USECHH) and Factory and Machinery Act 1967, employers/owners are required (mandatory) to reduce and maintain exposure level of chemical hazard at their workplace to the lowest practicable level or below permissible exposure limits.

A LEV system is designed to capture air contaminants at the source or point of generation before these air contaminants disperse into workplace air and further more into employee’s breathing zone.

The LEV consists of five basic components:
1. Hood
2. Duct
3. Fitting
4. Air cleaner device (Filter)
5. Fan and motor

Chemical Health Risk Assessment - CHRA

Under the Occupational Safety and Health (Use and Standard of Exposure of Chemicals Hazardous to Health) Regulations 2000, it is mandatory that a Chemical Health Risks Assessment (CHRA) is performed when chemicals hazardous to health are being used in the workplace.

Objective of CHRA

• To identify the hazards posed by each chemical substance used, stored, handled or transported within the workplace.
• To evaluate the degree of exposure of employees to the chemicals hazardous to health.
• To evaluate the adequacy of existing control measures.
• To conclude on the significance of the health risk posed by the chemicals hazardous to health.  
• To recommend further appropriate control measures to prevent or reduce risks.

Chemical Exposure Monitoring

Employers are required to limit employee’s workplace that expose to chemical to non-hazardous levels. Uncontrolled exposure to the chemical might be results in adverse health effects.

Permissible Exposure Limits

Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) refers to the limit of exposure that must not be exceeded by any employee over a specified time limit.  These limits denote concentration levels above which exposure to chemicals hazardous to health must be controlled.
